Outdoor Burning Guidelines and Permits

Everything you need to know about burning safely in Travis County ESD 11, Caldwell Hays ESD 1, Creedmoor, and Uhland.

Outdoor burning within our service areas requires a free permit. All fires larger than a 3x2' recreational fire must have an approved permit before ignition.

How to Get Your Permit

Residents can obtain a free permit online and must activate it via call or text before burning. Fires other than small recreational ones (3x2') require an approved permit.

Obtain your free permit at www.TCFRpermits.com and remember you must call or text 512-865-6276 to activate your open burning permit once received.

Official Rules

Outdoor burning in Texas is regulated by the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ). Understanding these state regulations is critical for ensuring safety and legal compliance before conducting any burn.

General Rules for Burning

Time & Visibility

Burning must begin no earlier than one hour after sunrise and end the same day, no later than one hour before sunset.

Attendance

The fire must be attended at all times by a responsible party until the flame is fully extinguished and the area is cold to the touch.

Weather Precautions

Burning is prohibited during high wind conditions, temperature inversions, or air stagnation days as defined by TCEQ.

Prohibited Items

NEVER burn hazardous materials, tires, plastics, rubber, pressure-treated wood, household trash, or electrical insulation.
